Paul Pastusek is the owner of Pastusek and Associates, Inc. a technology development and management consulting company.  Paul has the ability to create a compelling vision for new business strategies with a solid track record of launching new products.  He is experienced in recruiting and training multi-cultural technical professionals.  Paul is a problem solver who can help define, initiate and implement new business processes with structured change management.  He has managerial and technical credibility within an industry that thrives on product leadership and a flexible approach based on team needs and overall business objectives.

Hughes Christensen - Salt Lake City, UT and The Woodlands, TX    1988 to 2008

MANAGER DRILLING MECHANICS GROUP   2007 to present
Manage a group of PhD scientist responsible for:

  • Understanding drill string dynamics, developing models of vibration modes and suppression strategies.
  • Development of rock cutting mechanics, wear mechanisms, and correlation to rock properties.
  • Exploration of novel cutting mechanisms and downhole tools.
  • Establishing high level customer Joint Development Projects.

MANAGER NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT   2001 to 2007
Led the new product development team to commercialize new concepts and tools.

  • Initiated professional Project Management training and PMP certification of team leaders.
  • Directed a worldwide team of 35 research, engineering, and marketing professionals for the Research and Technology Development phase of the Genesis™ PDC product line.
  • Key member of the business strategy development team.
  • Supported the next generation PDC drill bit development with key technology projects.

ENGINEERING MANAGER   1998 to 2001
Initiated Design Application Response Teams to solve customer problems with the best available technology.

  • Leader in establishing company wide vision for new products, acting as a change agent within the company.
  • Established excellent working relationship with all levels of Marketing, Manufacturing, and R&D.
  • Helped initiate the Strategic Sourcing Team to develop cross functional vendor relationships.

MANAGER PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE   1996 to 1998
Established and directed this group to accelerate the transfer of technical information from all areas of the company to the front line marketing force.  We decreased transfer time from months to minutes.

  • Set up a competitive intelligence group for both tactical and strategic information.
  • Initiated the engineering WEB site as one of the first BHI Intranet sites.
  • Created a new forensic engineering training program.

MANAGER DIAMOND ENGINEERING   1993 to 1996
Transformed a group of eight designers into an engineering department.

  • Initiated the first cross functional product launch team which has become the company standard.
  • Produced formal training programs for the department - Basic Designer Training, Failure Analysis, Design Optimization, Field Training, and Learning Lunches.
  • Successfully introduced a major new product line, Gold Series™, moved the design group to The Woodlands, and doubled the group of designers to 24 personnel in one year.

MANAGER BIT DEVELOPMENT   1988 to 1993. 
Supervised the research staff in developing new drill bit technology.  Established a technical vision, objectives, budgets, and resource management for the group.

  • Implemented basic project management methods for new R&D projects.
  • Initiated a major change in project management within the company to concurrent engineering teams.
  • Established numerical modeling programs, lab tests of critical design features, and improved manufacturing processes.
  • Introduced a new product line representing approximately $45 million in revenue its first year, Anti-whirl PDC bits. This joint customer project was commercial well ahead of any competitive offering.

Reed Tool Company - Houston, TX - 1978 to 1988

MANAGER MARKETING ADMINISTRATION
Directed a staff of five on strategic business and product planning. Established and administered a data room for the sale of Reed required by the Department of Justice to allow the merger of Baker International and Hughes Tool Company.  Conducted business assessment of potential business license agreements and new R&D projects. 

PRODUCT MANAGER ROCK BITS
Coordinated engineering, manufacturing, and marketing efforts on new products.  Utilized a return on investment methodology, based on expected market gains and inventory cost that reduced new product introduction times by 6-12 months.

SUPERVISOR RESEARCH DESIGN
Hired and organized a staff of eight research engineers.  Developed a new product line, MudPick™ that represented approximately 75% of Reed's $150 million sales by the third year of production. 

STAFF ENGINEER
Developed design guidelines, formed alliances with customer R&D centers, and negotiated technical licenses.
